White Mountain Road and Wyman Canyon
Highway 168 heads east out of Big Pine into the Inyo National Forest. The highway begins to wind as it enters the south end of the White Mountains, eventually getting down to a blind one lane cut through a narrow section of the Westgard Pass. Immediately after, White Mountain Road breaks off to the north.
The road is a mix of asphalt and wide graded dirt as it winds through Pinyon Pines and Junipers. A turnout to the west leads immediately to the Grandview USFS campground, which has 26 first-come sites, basic facilities, and plenty of RV's. The Schulman Grove Visitor Center is a few miles up the road with trailheads to plenty of short hikes through the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest. As the road winds to the north, the landscape becomes more otherworldly, barren white granite with long reaching views across the Owens Valley. There are more short hiking trails in the Partriarch Grove, just before the gate before the UC owned Barcroft Research Facility. There is a parking area at the gate with interesting hiking trails leading in all directions.
